Émile or of the Education
by Waly Salomão
translation by Paul Bepple
r

Boy,
You are mine.
Boy,
You live in my heart.
Boy,
When things are right,
I want to live with you,
Boy.

Waly Salomão's Émile

This web site is a small homage to a great Brazilian poet born in Jequié, a little town in the Caatinga/interior of the state of Bahia, Brazil; this international project is a special effort to pay tribute and celebrate the life and the universal voice of one of the most creative and liveliest little engines behind the 1960's-70's Brazilian Tropicália musical/artistic movement: Waly Salomão!

Unfortunately Waly Salomão died unexpectedly in Rio de Janeiro in 2003 at the young age of 59. Although he is sorely missed by his loved ones, his friends and his fans, his memory, his dreams and his artistic legacy live on...

Waly Salomão's father was an immigrant to Brazil and established himself in the new country as a garment merchant. He was born in Syria, in the Middle East, and was a proud Moslem: It is said that he had a noticeable tattoo done on one of his arms which declared unmistakably: "Allah Akbar!" or "God is Great!"

On the other hand, much less is known about Waly Salomão's mother. What we do know is that she was a sertaneja woman from the countryside of Bahia. The hinterlands of Bahia most certainly are very different from the land of Syria. Yet nonetheless exotic, depending one's point of view.

The Salomão family read constantly, this according to the poet. And everybody in their home really loved reading the classics of Western literature. Waly Salomão was always laughing when amongst friends - the pictures captured and published by the media through the years confirm this. He was very expressive not only as a writer but also as a human being as he interacted with others. Waly Salomão understood and appreciated all the diversity found in all human beings.

"Me segura que vou dar um troço" ("Hold me back 'cause I'm about to get freaky" - my translation), wrote Waly Salomão while locked up in the Carandirú jail for having been caught by the police with a joint. Incidentally, it was this piece of writing that he produced behind closed bars that propelled him to the pinnacle as a poet...

Recently, when the Minister of Culture of Brazil, Minister Gilberto Gil invited him to the post of National Book Secretary, Waly Salomão accepted the position without thinking twice about it. One of his main goals as book secretary was to expand reading throughout Brazil, to make it more readily available to all Brazilians.

Dear visitor, please be aware that this still is a work in progress.
